ABOUT THE PROJECT
Stage 2 of the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor project involves the investigation, design and construction of an 8.7 kilometre section of single-lane highway between the North West Coastal Highway and the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road near the airport. This will provide a direct east-west link to the rapidly expanding Geraldton Port.
Abigroup will begin construction of the $52 million project in late 2008 with completion expected in early 2010.
The project is part of Main Roads Western Australia’s transport strategy to direct heavy and oversize vehicles away from the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road running through residential suburbs.
Heavy freight vehicles will bypass residential areas in Geraldton and instead travel through rural and industrial areas, improving transport efficiency and access to the Geraldton Port.
The new road will alleviate traffic pressure from freight vehicles through residential areas and provide a safer and more direct route to and from Geraldton Port.
